Imphal, June 11 2023:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) president Bijoy Kakchingtabam presented a report on the ongoing violence and unrest situation in Manipur at the national executive council meet of Indian Journal-ists' Union (IJU) underway at Agartala, Tripura.
Bijoy presented a factual report of the violence that broke out on May 3 as well as unrest in the state since then and strongly called for taking a resolution.
AMWJU general secretary Athokpam Jiten also presented another report at the IJU na-tional executive council meet held at Agartala Press Club Sun-day.
Three NEC members of IJU from Manipur namely Ashem Bhakta, K Sarojkumar Sharma and Khwairakpam Naoba also took part the meet, which will continue till Monday.
In his presentation, Bijoy said he came to submit a report at the IJU meet about difficulties and challenges faced by the journalist fraternity in covering news as well as suffering of the people due to the ongoing violence.
Amidst the strong social media move - ment, rumours, armchair jour-nalism and parachute journalism, none-AMWJU members are filing reports while local media per-sons are being accused of bias reportage.
Except for few which have permanent correspondent in Imphal, many national media made only one-sided reports and it was a huge challenge to scribes of Manipur.
It would be impossi-ble for journalists who came from Delhi or other places for few days and performed parachute jour-nalism to understand dynamics of the present problem in Manipur, Bijoy explained.
Further stating that the vi-olence in Manipur is being misinterpreted as com-munal riot, he maintained that when dynamics of the violence are discussed thor-oughly it could be established that electoral politics, re-gional armed resistance, illegal immigration from Myanmar, drug business, ethnic based homeland demand, deforestation and oc-cupying land by changing demography are some of the core factor.
Bijoy then stressed the need for the journalist fra-ternity of the entire country to understand dynamics of the ongoing violence.
While stating that journal-ist fraternity of Manipur fully understands difficulties faced by scribes based in Chura-chandpur, Bijoy called upon the meet to take a decision.
Hosted by Tripura Jour-nalists' Union, the opening session of the IJU meet was attended by Tripura's YAS and social welfare minister Tingku Roy, Agartala Munic-ipal Corporation mayor Di-pak Majumdar, UU president Geetartha Pathak, general secretary Sabina Inderiit and Tripura Journalists' Union president Pranab Sarkar as presidium members.
