Imphal, May 02 2024:
Kuki Chiefs' Association Manipur (KCAM) refuted the claim of chief minister N Biren on the emergence of 996 new villages in Manipur.
In a release, KCAM secretary (external) Letkhosei Mate called as immature and prejudice to link the rise and emergence of new villages to that of 'migrants' from Myanmar as stated by CM Biren.
"It is outlandish on the part of N Biren to feign ignorance of the origin, history and customs of the Kuki people who stood the test of time," the secretary maintained, while explaining that the age-old Kuki traditional chieftainship and laws of inheritance have been in practice since time immemorial, wherein the village chief or for that matter, the eldest of the family, endow rights of establishing new village/' settlement to his younger brother within his owned/demarcated land.
Letkhosei cautioned that the conjectural statements without knowing one's own customary laws and practices or ascertaining the facts on the ground could only result in more chaos and confusion in the already torn -apart state.
Recalling the statement of CM 'there is no illegal immigrants on Manipur' on June 19, 2023, the secretary remarked that intermittently changing narratives to tarnish the image of a particular community would not yield any positive result.
