Imphal, June 11 2023:
Two villagers of Ichum Keirap Kom have been rounded up by the people of Ichum Kom Keirap and Waroiching Leimaram and handed over to police.
As one of them is suspected to be a KRA cadre, police have initiated due verification process, sources informed.
The two men handed over to police have been identified as Paokhomang Karoung (37) s/o late Sonmang Karoung and Haotinkhup Telen (30) s/o Solen.
As they were seen coming toward Leimaram Maning Leikai in a very suspicious manner this morning, some villagers halted them and asked for their details.
One of them disclosed that he is a KRA cadre.
Subsequently, both the men were handed over to police.
On hearing about the man's disclosure that he is a KRA cadre, some villagers were infuriated and they thrashed the man a little before he was handed over to police, said the sources.
Notably, Ichum Keirap Kom is located in between Meitei villages and Kuki villages.
As tension has been simmering in the area, security forces have been deployed at certain points adjoining the area.
Meanwhile, Paokhomang Karoung who turned out to be an innocent civilian has been handed over to his family.
However, police have started due verification process of Haotinkhup Telen as he disclosed that he is a cadre of KRA, the sources added.
On the other hand, the SP of Bishnupur police has expressed gratitude to the villagers of both Ichum Kom Keirap and Waroi-ching Leimaram, civil socie- ty organisations and CAPF/Army personnel for handing over the youths to the police for necessary verification.
The SP also thanked media persons for their co-operation.
The SP, in a statement, also appealed to all communities to hand over any unidentified persons who venture into their area rather than taking the law into their hands in the larger interest of peace and unity in Bishnupur district and Manipur at large.
