Imphal, November 10 2022:
Planning and Development Authority (PDA) Chairman and Keirao A C MLA Lourembam Rameshwor Meitei has expressed keen desire to promote the State's handloom and handicraft sector by incorporating innovative ideas.
Rameshwor was speaking as chief guest at the Imphal East and Jiribam Day celebrated today as a part of the ongoing MANITEX 2022 .
MANITEX which is held every year since 2018 with the primary objective of promoting the State's handloom and handicraft products deserves appreciation from one and all, he said.
However, there is a need to check and modify the handlooms distributed to weavers every year as a part of MANITEX.
There have been many complaints of physical problems like back pain, aberration of eye sight etc from weavers against these handlooms.
As such, there is an urgent need to look into these problems and do the needful, Rameshwor said.
It is rather unfortunate that some close aides of Ministers and MLAs have been targeting officers for not giving handlooms to the weavers recommended by them, he said.
He also reminded the gathering of the time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a handloom product of Manipur and Chief Minister N Biren's determination to promote local handloom and handicraft products.
He then appealed to all the people to use local handloom and handicraft products as far as possible.
Talking about the issue of influx of non-local people, the MLA said that many of these non-local people have an intention to settle here permanently by marrying Manipuri women.
Asserting that the majority of the non-local people who come to the State have criminal records, he appealed to all parents not to encourage the idea of marrying their daughters to non-local men.
The Imphal East and Jiribam Day celebration was presided by Manipur Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL) Chairman and MLA Kh Ibomcha.
Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar, Imphal East DC Kh Diana and BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sarda were also seated on the dais as presidium members.
The sixth day of MANITEX 2022 being held at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi also featured a buyers and sellers meet.
