Former District Transport Officer of Senapati, W Thapa Maring had been remanded in seven days police custody remand after he was produced before the Special Court, Prevention of Corruption Act for his alleged involvement in re-registering stolen vehicles with or without valid documents or forged documents.
W Thapa Maring (59) s/o (L) Angthang Maring of Maring Kherou village, Chandel, presently staying at Mantripukhri Vaiphei colony was arrested yesterday by a team of Imphal West district police.
Through an APP, the IO of the case submitted that a drive was conducted by the Anti-Vehicle Theft Cell of Manipur Police against suspects involved in lifting vehicles and re-registration of such vehicles.
On receiving information about the presence of some suspects in and around Khuman Lampak Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) area on October 13, the team arrested one Juniyat Rahaman (35) s/o Karimuddin of Khergao Awang Leikai and was later released on interim bail for medical treatment.
In a follow up action, W Thapa Maring was arrested yesterday afternoon.
During interrogation, Juniyat Rahaman had disclosed that he worked as a broker for making vehicle registration cards, NOCs and other related documents for transferring ownership of vehicles.
He started the business in March 2022 and continued till his arrest, according to the IO .
Juniyat Rahaman came into contact with W Thapa Maring when he applied for a driving licence.
At that time, W Thapa Maring was posted as District Transport Officer, Thoubal.
In March this year when W Thapa Maring was posted as District Transport Officer, Senapati, transfer of ownership of a large number of vehicles was done without proper valid documents and NOCs were issued against many vehicles which were bought/brought from outside the State.
During preliminary interrogation, W Thapa Maring admitted the charges levelled against him and disclosed that he was involved in transferring the ownership of many vehicles when he was posted as DTO Senapati, the IO told the Court.
The Court, on perusal of case record and after hearing the submission of the IO, remanded the accused in police custody till November 16 .
