Meitei : The varied communities of Manipur :: Pix - DIPR Manipur
Wondering to write something!!! Then I came across one of my friends Facebook post and his post open my eyes to write about “Meitei Community from Manipur”. Thanks my boon companion Yaikhomba Naoroibam. Manipur - once upon a time a powerful kingdom became a part of India in October 1949.
In the year 1956 was made a Union Territory and a fully-fledged state in the year 1972 by the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. The state is living together with many communities and MEITEI COMMUNITY is the majority.
The population of Meitei Community is 44% as per the 2011 census. Here writing about the "Meitei" community from Manipur. Giving importance to some fields:-
SPORTS: Meitei athletes have indeed brought pride to the nation in various sports events like the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
The late Lourembam Brojeshori Devi was the first female Indian Judoka to compete at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma won the Silver Medal representing the Men’s Hockey Team won the Bronze Medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the Silver Medal in Weightlifting at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
ARTS: The Meitei community's contributions to the arts are equally commendable. Achieving international and national awards in the arts reflects their creative talents and their dedication to preserving and enriching their cultural heritage.
For example, "Thang-Ta, Pung Cholom, Raas Leela Dance". The Manipuri martial art guru Kakchingtabam Shanathoiba Sharma got Padma Shri awardee in the year 2023.
SCIENCE: It's impressive that Meitei scientists have been associated with prestigious projects like "Chandrayaan." This underscores their role in India's scientific advancements and space exploration efforts. The Manipuri scientist, Dr. Ningthoujiam Raghu Singh was among the ISRO Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing mission team.
INDIAN ARMY: The sacrifices made by Meiteis in the Indian Army, especially during the Kargil war, showcase their patriotism and commitment to safeguarding the nation's security. Five soldiers from Manipur, who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.
An addition to the above mentioned personalities who are the gems of the nation, the state already carved the history and there are many who will carve a niche for themselves in their respective fields.
