Demand for Manipuri language be officially recognised as one of classical languages :: An Artwork
About the Artwork:
There is a growing demand in the Indian states of Manipur, Assam and Tripura, that Manipuri language (alias Meitei language) be officially recognised as one of the classical languages of the Government of India.
In 1951, regarding the international literary importance of this officially yet undeclared classical Manipuri language, Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee, the most eminent linguistic scholar of India, said, "Among the various Tibeto-Burman languages, the most important, and in literature certainly of much greater importance than Newari, is the Meithei or Manipuri language."
Regarding the rich antiquity of this very unrecognized classical language, he further said, "The beginnings of this Old Manipuri literature (as in the case of Newari) may go back to 1500 years, or even 2000 years, from now."
Neglecting this highly underrated gem of India will be a great injustice. Justice delayed is justice denied. The only reason for not declaring Manipuri as the official classical language will be none other than political one.
