Imphal, November 23 2022:
Khurkhul locals on Wednesday staged a sit-in protest denouncing the claim being made by some people that Khurkhul village, which is under Imphal West district, is part of Kangpokpi district.
Speaking on the sidelines of the sit-in, Khurkhul Land Protection Committee president Ngangbam Raghu-mani reminded all concerned that Khurkhul was allotted the tag of Village no.38 by the government and covered the hill areas of Leimakhong.
However, the hill areas were steadily occupied by members of some other communities over the past few years, who are now claiming the area to be their own.
On top of this, signages have been erected claiming that the area which falls under Imphal West district is under the jurisdiction of Kangpokpi district.
While opining that the prevailing situation could turn worse at any given moment, he urged the government to take note of this serious matter and save the disintegration of the total land area of the village.
During the sit-in, the protestors held placards inscribed with slogans like "Stop land encroachment with SoO armed group", "Stop British Colonial policy - Sadar Hills", "Form District Boundary Commission" and "Withdraw renaming of Villages" .
They also shouted slogans demanding the demarcation of the areas of Imphal West district, Kangpokpi district and Sadar Hills, to stop the encroachment under the shadows of SoO groups and that Sadar Hills is colonial policy.
