Nambol police arrested three for allegedly stealing a cow and butchering it for its meat for sale today.
The cow was pregnant and the three had allegedly killed it along with the unborn calf, said sources.
The arrested have been identified as Wahengbam Dolendro, Wairokpam Arun alias Naoba and Md Burhanuddin alias Zeba.
A fourth person allegedly involved in the crime is at large.
Police had launched an investigation after a complaint was lodged by one Leichombam Lilabati of Phoijing Tera Makong on November 19 at around 3.30 pm stating that her cow was stolen from its shed by some unknown persons on the intervening night of November 15 and 16.The complaint mentioned that while her family members were searching the missing cow, they learned from some locals that her stolen cow was found killed and beheaded at Tanjao Leirak some 200 meters away from her residence.
During the course of investigation, specific information was received that one Wahengbam Dolendro alias Bungcha, 33 of Bamdiar Makha Leikai was involved in the commission of the crime and was hiding at Kakyai village in order to avoid arrest, said a police source.
A team of Nambol police station and Bishnupur commando then rushed to the area and arrested Wahengbam Dolendro from Kakyai Tona Kangjeibung at around 3.30 pm by observing necessary formalities yesterday The police then arrested two others identified as Wairokpam Arun alias Naoba, 32 of Bamdiar Tera Makhong Makha Leikai and Md Burhanuddin alias Zeba, 34 of Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai for alleged involvement in the crime.
The three arrested were produced before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Imphal West II.
The Court remanded the accused persons to 3 days police custody till November 25 .
