Academy vows to revive dying art forms

Academy of Indigenous Music (AIM) has pledged to take proactive role in promoting the dying art forms of Manipur as the Academy organised a teaching and presentation event in relation with its 16th foundation day at Bamon Kampu Mayai Leikai community hall on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, AIM secretary Shyamchand Irengbam observed how the performing art forms of the state are dying gradually and decline in the number of cultural related events.
Except for presentation of some types of Raas Leela dances at religious venues, the art form is no longer performed in localities.
The academy has been putting efforts to promote these dying art forms and as a result able to revive art forms like Goura Leela and Raas Leela at least to some extent, he said.
The secretary also recounted that the academy was established by some likeminded artistes without any external support, and stated that it has now 48 artistes playing major role in promoting the dying art forms.
Apart from grooming new artistes, the academy has also been producing at least one production each of Raas Leela, Goura Leela, Gosta Leela, Kalidamohon, Krishna Leela among others.
A Bas anta Raas production was also prepared in connection with this year's foundation day.
Besides, the academy will present performances of folk & classical dances and Khulang Ishei among others, Shyamchand elaborated.
He also informed that AIM is all set to perform in Bangladesh.
JNMDA retired guru and AIM advisor Konsam Kumar presided over the function while Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee N Amusana was guest of honour.
AIM artistes also presented various cultural programmes as part of the event.
