Thoubal, April 25 2024:
Family members of 69 households who were evicted during a drive at Waithou Sanggomsang on June 12, 2022 and have been staying in relief camp, were again rendered homeless after the storm that swept on Wednesday afternoon blew away their makeshift houses.
Around 100 members including children have been left without shelter after the gale blew away or caused irreparable damage to around 13 homes.
The 69 households were evicted by the government as they allegedly encroached in protected forest area.
As such, the families have been staying in the relief camp opened at Waithou Khongnang Kachin public ground, by the locals.
So far, neither the government nor the local MLA has paid any attention to the plight of the campers.
One resident named Moirangthem Nanao Devi said that the families have been left in dire straits especially after the storm blew away the homes of 13 families.
Thus, she drew the attention of the chief minister to extend some sort of assistance to the evicted families, many of whom are unable to even send their kids to school.
