Imphal, April 25 2024:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) for taking up requisite steps including effective security measures to ensure peaceful conduct of election in the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency on Friday and uphold democracy.
In a press meet held at Congress Bhawan, here, on Thursday, MPCC working president Dr Kh Ratankumar opined that the first phase of the 18th Lok Sabha election in the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency held on April 19, put democracy to shame.
Videos and photographs of the polling day went viral on social media platforms, affirming the same.
Appealing to ECI to take up all necessary steps including full-proof security to prevent a repeat of similar incidents in the second phase of the election, he urged for upholding democracy during the polling.
Informing that an MPCC team including its president had assessed the situation in Jiribam assembly constituency ahead of the polls on Friday, Dr Ratankumar raised concern over vulnerability and possible tension at some of the polling stations.
As such, INC candidate Alfred Kanngam Arthur's election agent John Pamei has filed an application to the chief electoral officer requesting for strict security measures at 17 polling stations (40/1 to 40/17) in Jiribam.
Thus, the working president sought confirmation from the Commission in this regard.
