Imphal, May 04 2024:
In a recent interview with THE WEEK, Chief Minister N Biren delved into the multifaceted challenges confronting the state, with a particular focus on ethnic violence and illegal immigration issues.
As the state marked the unfortunate one-year anniversary of this strife on May 3, Biren highlighted the government's efforts to tackle these pressing issues head-on.
He underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasising ongoing initiatives aimed at deporting illegal immigrants and retrieving arms wielded by youth.
He noted that while some youth felt compelled to bear arms for self-defence against violence inflicted by illegal immigrants, the ultimate goal was to restore security, thereby obviating the need for such measures.
The Chief Minister elaborated on the state's efforts to recover arms through ongoing operations across various regions of Manipur.
These endeavours signify the government's unwavering commitment to reinstating law and order and fostering an environment conducive to peace and stability.
He also said that blaming the state government is a result of misunderstanding among some groups.
He also touched upon illegal poppy cultivation, deforestation, encroachment in forest areas and cross border drug trafficking among other pressing issues concerning the state.
Addressing concerns about active insurgent groups, Biren acknowledged groups like PLA and PREPAK as ongoing challenges.
