Protest continues against liquor legalisation

The series of protests against the decision of the state government to legalise liquor, which is being spearheaded jointly by Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA), All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and Nongchup Imphal Palem Ima Apunba Lup (NIMPAL) continued unabated with demand for withdrawal of the cabinet decision and enforcing blanket ban on liquor sale and consumption getting louder.
As part of the series, a sit-in protest was held at Haoreibi Awang Leikai Keithel on Tuesday.
NIMPAL Haoreibi Branch, Haoreibi Apunba Nupi Lup, Haoreibi Northern Star Club, Social Development Organisation, Haoreibi and CADA Imphal West District Committee jointly organised the protest under the joint aegis of CADA, Nupi Samaj and NIMPAL.
Speaking on the occasion, NIMPAL general secretary Soraisam Shanti elaborated on the negative impacts of liquor consumption to health, economy and family relationship in the state and how it leads to social crisis.
She also spoke on the efforts made by Meira Paibi groups across the state against drugs and alcohol to save the society, and asserted that they cannot accept the government's policy to legalise liquor.
