Imphal, November 23 2022:
Forum for Protection of Heritage of 23 Unsung Heroes, Andaman Chapter, 1891 observed Exile Day in commemoration of the 23 brave soldiers of Manipur who were sent to Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the British just after the end of Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891, at the memorial site of the exiled martyrs located on the southern side of BT Park, here, on Wednesday.
MAHUD minister Y Khemchand attended the observance function as chief guest and led the gathering in paying floral tributes to the 23 unsung heroes of the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891 including Maharaj Kulachandra, who were banished to Andaman and Nicobar Islands as punishment just after the end of the war on the charge of waging war against the British crown.
Addressing the gathering, Y Khemchand said that chief minister N Biren has given assurance of observing Exile Day at the state level from the next year in honour of the 23 unsung heroes who fought against the British for protecting the independence of Manipur.
Tracing footsteps of the forefathers exiled to Andaman remained a dream for a long time but it was realised when Union home minister Amit Shah announced renaming of Mount Harriet in Andaman, where the 23 exiled heroes of Manipur had resided, as Mount Manipur.
This indeed was in recognition of the 23 unsung heroes of Manipur exiled to the Andaman by the British and every Manipuri should be proud of this, he said.
As part of the observance function, a book entitled 'Andaman Da Loi Thakhiba Athouba 23' written by Kakchingtabam Geetchandra Sharma was also released.
