Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur observed the 18th death anniversary of Ima Kombi at her resting place known as 'Ima Kombi gi Yatapham' at Lamphel Sanakeithel on Tuesday.
The observance function was attended by Poirei Leimarol president L Memchoubi and Meira Paibi Welfare Association, Kangleipak president R Rengsongak Koireng as presidium members while AMUCO president Ph Nando Luwang was the chief speaker.
Delivering the key note address, Poirei Leimarol general secretary Th Apabi Leima said that people of Manipur are facing numerous problems as a result of India's annexation of Manipur on October 15, 1949 after the British granted independence in 1947 .
In the name of suppressing insurgency, Armed Forces Special Power Act 1958 is being enforced in Manipur thereby allowing security forces to kill and torture innocent civilians with impunity while women are being raped.
In other to bring a peaceful Manipur by putting an end to excesses of security forces, Ima Kombi established Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur and she bravely fought for ensuring security of the people.
Her sacrifices guided the present generation to the right path, Apabi said, adding that people of Manipur are facing problems till date as the British released Manipur from their colonial yoke in an improper manner.
In his speech, AMUCO president Nando Luwangna lauded the role played by Ima Kombi to strengthen the Meira Paibi movement, and said that the present generation of Meira Paibi need to realise the dream of the late leader by following in her footsteps.
He also expressed regret that some Meira Paibi activists have taken the path contradictory to what Ima Kombi had shown and these Meira Paibi leaders are attending events which they should never take part.
Citing an example, Nando said that Meira Paibi leaders are being carried away by policy and programme of some candidates contesting the election and they are endorsing election related activities which could bring harm to the society instead of fighting against such anti-social activities.
In her speech, Poirei Leimarol president Memchoubi expressed serious concern over participation of Meira Paibi in election related activities and appealed to Meira Paibi leaders not to take part in election related activities though it is right of every Meira Paibi to cast vote to candidate of their choice.
She also stressed the need for a collective Meira Paibi movement to fulfil the dream of Ima Kombi.
R Rengsongak Koireng also said that emerging generation needs to clearly study the present situation of the land while mothers need to shoulder their right responsibility towards promoting independent thoughts and innovative ideas.
