Poppy plantations destroyed, 9 held

A combined team of Imphal East police, Assam Rifles and Forest Department destroyed 247 acres of poppy plantation and arrested nine cultivators in January.
Speaking to the media at SP Imphal East Conference Hall today, SP M Pradip stated that Imphal East police and a column of 15 Assam Rifles, as a part of the War on Drugs campaign, destroyed 70 acres of poppy cultivation at Aigejang hill range under Sagolmang police station yesterday and arrested two cultivators - Seiminlal Khongsai alias Hemin (32), s/o Lamseh Khongsai of Phanjang and Ipiesap Samding (35), s/o Haigen Samding, both from Phanjang village, Peren district Nagaland currently staying at Khamenlok village.
They have been handed over to Sagolmang police station.
The SP further stated that district police with assistance from 15 Assam Rifles and Forest Department have destroyed 12 acres of poppy cultivation at Champhai Hill range, 15 acres at Chansang Hill range, 10 acres at Kongba Maru hill range, 35 acres at Maharani hill range and 70 acres at Aigijang hill range under Sagolmang Police Station in January.
The combined team also arrested six cultivators including one female and registered 5 FIRs against them, Pradip added.
Further, the combined team destroyed another 25 acres of poppy plantation at K Henjang village, 45 acres at Gamnom village hill range and 35 acres at Mlonghlam village under Thoubal Dam police station and arrested two cultivators including one female.
The SP concluded that altogether 246 acres of poppy plantation worth around Rs 12.35 crore were destroyed in January.
