DGAR partakes half marathon in Shillong

The Assam Rifles today organized the inaugural "Half Marathon" as part of "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebrations at the Headquarters of Directorate General Assam Rifles, Laitkor Garrison, Shillong.
The half marathon was organised in commemoration of 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture, achievements and also promotes the "Fit India Movement", said IGAR (S) in a statement.
The half marathon was flagged off by Lt Gen KC Panchanathan, AVSM, GOC 101 Area and saw an enthusiastic participation of more than 678 serving personnel and families of Assam Rifles, 101 Area, 58 GTC, ARC, Eastern Air Command and CRPF.

The run was divided in three categories of 21 km, 10 km and 2.5 km each having its own age groups and 97 people participated in 21 km half Marathon, 245 in the 10 km run and 332 in 2.5 Km "Run for Fun", said the statement.
Gp Capt Saikat stood first in the over 51 years, 21 km category while Col EJ Simeon stood second and Lt Gen PC Nair, AVSM, YSM, DG Assam Rifles won the joint third prize with Commander Venkatesh (retd), it said.
The other top three winners of the 21 km category for 41 to 50 age category included Rifleman Bharat Bhushan, Rifleman Devender and Sub /SKT Bishan Singh.
Rifleman SU Visle, Rifleman Kosting Dhar and Rifleman Francis Zimik won the first, second and third prize in the 31 to 40 age group while Rifleman Marvin, Rifleman Rajesh Singh and Rifleman Anil Gurung stood first, second and third in the 18 to 30 age group category of 21 km, it said.
The fervour and spirit of the marathon was boosted further with the participation of ladies and children in all categories, it said while adding that children barely 5 years old participated and successfully completed the 2.5 km category showing their enthusiasm and resolve.
The Assam Rifles popularly known as the 'Sentinels of the North East' has committed itself towards peace and development of the North East and has carried out numerous activities promoting "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" and "Fit India Movement" in the past.
The activities not only brought cohesiveness in the region but also played a pivotal role towards "Nation Building and Unity", thereby making it a "Force that Binds the North East", it said.
Assam Rifles also thanked the sponsors of the event including SBI Bank, YES Bank and the event organisers, Cyruns Sports and Wellness.
