The flag hoisting ceremony of National People's Party (NPP) Manipur State general secretary (Organisation) and party's Kshetrigao AC candidate Sheikh Noorul Hassan was held at his Kshetri Awang Leikai residence, followed by a public meeting on Sunday.
Speaking as the chief guest of the event, NPP national president Conrad K Sangma remarked that overwhelming support of the people towards NPP candidates is a sign that it will emerge as the single largest part in the ensuing elections and form a government led by the party.
Condemning the slew of threats being meted out to candidates and workers of NPP, Conrad said that the party will continue to contest the polls without fear and uphold the people's wishes for forming a government which will improve the infrastructure, agriculture sector, address issues concerning minorities and all other important aspects.
"NPP is a secular party and its motto is to walk alongside the people," he said, while urging party workers to work hard and campaign
to the utmost level.
Responding to questions from media persons, Conrad stated that NPP was part of the ruling BJP-led coalition government for the past 5 years.
A coalition requires consultation and discussion among the parties involved.
However, NPP was at a disadvantage while joining the coalition but choose to stand by its previous commitment.
At present, the party is able to hold on its own and will be in a favourable position after the ensuing polls.
In his speech, Sheikh Noorul Hassan said that he came forward to contest the elections with objective of ending the prolonged communal politics in Kshetrigao and helping the constituency to become more inclusive and progressive.
Presided over by NPP Kshetrigao Unit president Md Abdul Ghaffar Khan, the event was also attended by Deputy CM and NPP national VP Yumnam Joykumar; Wangkhei AC NPP candidate Y Erabot; NPP Manipur State VP and Yaiskul AC NPP candidate H Vikramjit as guests of honour.
A one-day political conference of NPP was also held on Saturday at Sora under Kakching assembly constituency.
The programme was attended by Meghalaya home minister James Sangma, NPP national treasurer and Meghalaya commerce & industry minister S Dhar, NPP candidates M Rameshwar (Kakching), Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao), NPP Kakching AC president Shougaijam Shyamjai and others as presidium members.
In his address, James Sangma said that after the upcoming election, the next government in the state will be led by NPP and asserted that the new government will address issues related to shortage of water supply and poor road connectivity, improve the health sector, etc.
Speaking at the event, M Rameshwar claimed that like in the previous election, former Kakching MLA Y Surchandra Med his nomination papers wrongly and as such disqualification would be the only outcome even if he (Surchandra) got elected.
