Candidates and workers of National People's Party (NPP) continue to face gun and bomb attacks on their residences and polling booths as the election date draws near.
After a bomb attack was carried out at the residence of a worker of Khurai AC NPP candidate Laitonjam Jayananda at Khabeisoi Mayai Leikai a few days ago, unknown miscreants exploded a bomb at NPP's office in Polling Station no.3-14 in Khewa late Saturday evening.
Locals of Khewa staged a sit-in protest on Sunday, condemning the attack.
Speaking on the sidelines, Moirangkampu GP pradhan Lourembam Rameshwar recounted that the attack was carried out around 11.15 pm Saturday, by two unidentified people who came on a two-wheeler vehicle.
He then condemned the attack and urged all concerned to allow the1 voters choose their preferred candidates in peace, while further urging all not to repeat such acts in the future; Candidate Laitonjam Jayananda also condemned the incident and urged the Home Department and the Chief Electoral Officer to take up necessary security measures, in addition to declaring Khurai as a hyper sensitive zone.
He also urged the authority concerned to investigate the ongoing attacks, while questioning who will be held responsible if the incidents were to continue.
Meanwhile, unknown miscreants opened several rounds of gunfire at the residential gate of one Bankabihari, a worker of Noariya Pakhanglakpa NPP candidate Soibam Subhaschandra, at Kwakeithel Lamdong on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Speaking to newspersons in this regard, Bankabihari informed that the attack occurred around 12.45 am.
The unidentified gunmen fired 4-5 rounds at the polling camp set up in front of his residential gate, he conveyed, while alleging that the attack was politically motivated.
He then urged all for ensuring the elections are held in a peaceful manner.
Kwakeithel Lamdong Meira Paibi vice president Soibam Chitrani also urged the CM to look into the recent spate of poll-related violent incidents, while adding that the public want to vote peacefully.
She then said that guns and bombs cannot suppress the voices of the people.
