MU VC stresses on further strengthening Sports Department

Manipur University Vice Chancellor, Professor N Lokendra has stressed on the need for further strengthening the Sports Department in view of the recent performance at the All India Inter University sports competitions.
He was speaking as the chief guest during "Award Ceremony of University Coats" to the varsity athletes at Dr Kamal Indoor Stadium, Manipur University.
While highlighting the importance of a more dedicated staff, he also stated the need of using university infrastructure at its best and a major clean up revamping in the wake of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council's (NAAC) visit slated for April 18 and 19 .

The Dean of Students' Welfare, MU, Prof M Premjit also attended the event as functional president while Prof W Chandbabu Singh, Registrar, Manipur University and T Phulen, Director Youth Affairs and Sports were guests of honour.
Speaking at the function, Prof Chandbabu Singh also drew attention of all concerned to identify the camps where more emphasis is needed to help Manipur University perform better in upcoming zonal and All India Inter University sporting events.
YAS Director, T Phulen, in the meantime highlighted Government policies through which meritorious athletes who shone at Asian Games, Olympic and Commonwealth Games are inducted to various departments at official posts and encouraged with various incentives.
Prof M Premjit, who was presiding the function, noted that individual players are doing fine but maintained there is need for improvement in team disciplines.
During the ceremony which was long pending after being interrupted due to Covid pandemic, coats were distributed to athletes and officials who represented the University in Archery, Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Powerlifting, Sepak Takraw, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wushu disciplines from 2013 to 2019 .
Besides the coats, cash prizes of Rs 15,000; Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 were also handed over to athletes who finished first, second and third positions in individual events and Rs 10,000; Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 to each team member who finished in top three places respectively in team events.
MU Sports Committee secretary also presented the cash prize scheme for meritorious players at World University Games.
The secretary said that the players who finished within top three places in individual events will be feted with cash prizes of Rs 50,000; Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively and Rs 30,000; Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000 each to members of teams making it to the top three places at the World Games.
Highlighting the achievements of Manipur University in the field of sports, the secretary said that the university which was established in 1980, has so far amassed 114 gold, 119 silver and 142 bronze medals from various inter university events.
The university has also won 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals at the recently held Khelo India University Games, the secretary said and added that the Manipur University continues to remain among dominant universities of India.
Further adding that the university has been encouraging meritorious athletes with cash incentives, the secretary also stated that the university has earlier honoured former MU students- Olympian archer Laishram Bombayla and renowned judoka Kh tombi with cash prize of Rs 50,000 each.
