Key role of education in life stressed

Governor Anusuiya Uikey has highlighted the significance of education as the most important instrument for social, economic and political transformation of a society.
She was delivering a speech at the 36th Convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Regional Centre, Imphal, held today at Asha Jina Complex in Imphal.
"In a diverse society like ours, education acts as an integrative force.
The need for advanced and quality education has become ever more pressing.
Quality of higher education largely depends on the quality of teaching and research.
It is imperative to have quality faculty who will bring transformation in students and lead them to acquire the right knowledge.
Research in our universities must be emphasized and promoted to a great extent", the Governor said.

She added that with the introduction of NEP-2020, there has been a strong movement for imparting education and skills to the youths.
She also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme and urged the IGNOU authorities toinitiate this programme.
The Governor also reiterated the Prime Minister's commitment for developing the North East.
Appreciating the contribution of IGNOU to promote open and distance education system in the country, the Governor said that the university has been rendering yeoman's service by democratizing higher education providing quality education irrespective of age, religion, gender and region and offering affordable education to the underprivileged students and free education to jail inmates.
She added that UNESCO has recognized the university as the largest higher learning institute in the world.
The Governor then wished the students success in their future endeavours and handed over degrees to them during the convocation ceremony.
Dr Salam Dilan Singh, Regional Director, IGNOU, Imphal said that with NEP-2020, IGNOU is playing a major role in education transformation.
Student enrolment rate has been increasing on a year-to- year basis and almost 20,000 students have been enrolled in Manipur.
1,150 students will be receiving degrees, diplomas and certificates in the convocation, he added.
