College students debate on drug menace in state

An inter college debating competition on the topic 'Increase in drug abuse case in Manipur is due to ineffective management of the government policy' was held on Monday at Liberal College, Luwangsangbam.
The inaugural session of the competition organised by Liberal College Students' Union was attended by professor Ch Ibohal Meitei of MIMS, Manipur University as chief guest and Liberal College principal Dr W Ibechaobi Devi as president while vice principal W Pradipkumar Singh, MU philosophy department head professor L Biswanath Sharma, DM College law department head Dr N Pramod Singh and advocate M Swamalata Devi were guests of honour.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Prof Ch Ibohal expressed that inculcating the habit of speaking in front of public among young students through debate and other competitions will give them the opportunity to better understand the democratic norms.
Organising such competitions frequently will not only help young students to learn the use of parliamentary language in public platform but also bring significant change in their overall development process.
Drug abuse being a big issue besetting the state at present, thorough discourse on the same will help students to take up some activities to solve and motivate them to find the root causes of the problem, professor Ibohal observed.
Altogether 27 students from different colleges of the state took part in the competition held with professor Ibohal as speaker and professor L Biswanath Sharma, Dr N Pramod Singh and advocate M Swarnalata Devi as jury members.
Bemboi Salam of DM College of Arts bagged the first position in the debating competition while Waikhom Sena of Liberal College secured the second position.
The third position went to Thokchom Roshan of MB College.
Sanatombi Laishram of Imphal College and DM College of Arts students Elangbam Jemson and Kaijonwangbow Thiumai were also given consolation prizes.
