Clean water, sanitation campaign launched

Public Health and Engineering (PHE) minister L Susindro Meitei on Monday inaugurated an awareness campaign on 'Clean Water and Sanitation: Empowering Communities for Sustain able Development', which is to be carried out in all 16 districts of Manipur, for the first time in Kamjong district.
As part of the inaugural function, which was organised by PHED, the minister flagged off a bike rally from Khuman Lampak, here.
Speaking on the occasion, Susindro informed that the awareness campaign will be carried out in all the districts, to help the people understand proper usage of water without any wastage.
He urged the people for preservation of water sources taking into due consideration of the frequent water shortage issue in the state, while further appealing to all concerned to put an end to deforestation in the hill areas.
The bike rally passed through Ngariyan road and Yairipok before culminating at Kasom Khullen in Kamjong district.
There an awareness programme was held at the Sadhavna Mandap of Kasom Khullen.
The programme was attended by Kasom Khullen SDO P Duna Duo, Kasom Khullen Village headman Wungwung Shanglai and PHED Kamjong EE Chamdanlung Rongmei as presidium members.
Renowned singers of the state also sang songs, carrying messages of clean water and sanitation, on the occasion.
In his speech, Kasom Khullen SDO P Duna Duo reminded that water is vital for the existence of mankind and all living beings.
As such, we must cultivate the habit of using water in a judicious manner.
He then urged for switching from jhum cultivation in the hill areas to another agricultural practice which is environment friendly or taking any other alternative livelihood, while informing that different government departments have taken up various efforts for the welfare of the hill people and conservation of forests.
