Imphal, June 05 2023:
Entire villagers of Leimaram Waroi Ching in Bihnupur district are taking shelter at Leimram high school for fear of possible attack by Kuki militants.
Leimaram Waroi Ching is a small Meetei village having 83 households only and it is surrounded by Kuki villages on all four sides.
With the es-calation of violence between the Meetei and Kuki, all the 354 villagers have fled their homes to take shelter in the relief camp opened at Lei-maram high school.
A woman named L Leiren-tombi told media persons that Leimaram Waroi Ching is en-circled by Kuki villages namely Leivon Khunou, Sadar Zoute, Monbung and Tinkai Khunou.
She said that the villagers left their homes after armed Kuki militants were seen moving atop the nearby hills.
Some villagers have taken shelter at their relatives' place while some have moved to work place.
However, majority of the villagers are taking shelter at Leimaram high school relief camp.
To protect the village, some personnel of Gorkha Regiment are stationed in the village and they allow villagers to feed fodder and look after domestic animals from 6am to 10am daily.
Though there has been no attack from Kuki militants so far, they seem to be waiting for the opportune moment and hence villagers opted for safer location, she added.
Another villager told media persons that villagers want to return to their re-spective homes but it would not be possible till arrival of state force like IRB or MR.The villager also demanded issuance of firearms to fight Kuki militants if government is unable to deploy state force for protection of the village.
