Imphal, June 05 2023:
A team of the National People's Party (NPP) led by its vice-president N Joykumar called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raja Bhavan yesterday and discussed the prevailing situation of Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at his Naoremthong residence after their meeting with the Governor, Joykumar lamented that the violent crisis which erupted on May 3 has gone down very little so far.
Even if the situation has improved at some places, there are reports of violence and arson from other places, he noted.
"As I served as the DGP Manipur for a long time, I raised certain points and put forward some suggestions to the Government through the Governor in order to bring the situation under control", Joykumar said.
He told the Governor that the situation has seen very little improvement although a large number of Central paramilitary forces were flown into the State in the wake of the violent crisis.
The way the State Government has been handling the situation is reactive in nature and it would not be able to control the situation, Joykumar said.
He then advocated pro-active arrangement of security forces.
There should be a proper plan to handle the situation based on intelligence reports.
Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh may be expert in different areas but he does not have thorough knowledge of Manipur, he said.
It is good that a non-Manipur has been appointed as DGP Manipur.
There are many well-experienced and knowledgeable officers in Manipur and the new DGP may consult them in order to take up timely actions, Joykumar said.
"We also discussed about the people's growing distrust of Central paramilitary forces with the Governor '', he conveyed.
It requires sincere efforts to win the people's trust, he said.
Valley people think that Assam Rifles favours the Kukis and this may be true to some extent.
But it is hard to believe that all the AR troops work in favour of the Kuki even if some of them have an inclination toward Kukis, he continued.
The sheer arrogance displayed by a team of AR troops at Sugnu police station on June 2 and the way Kuki militants burnt down the house of MLA K Ranjit might have accentuated the people's perception of the AR, he remarked.
He also highlighted the urgent need for rehabilitation and resettlement of all the displaced people.
Joykumar reportedly expressed keen desire to the Governor to ensure free movement of vehicles on National Highways.
He then underscored the urgent need to talk with CSOs of both sides in order to bring peace and normalcy in the State.
NPP State unit working president L Jayantakumar, NPP general secretary (organisation) RK Rameshwar and NPP Manipur State unit vice-president U Ramesh too attended the meeting with the Governor.
