World Environment Day was celebrated widely across the State today under the theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution' highlighting people's actions toward plastic pollution reduction.
World Environment Day is observed to raise awareness about environmental protection and sustainability after the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) proposed a special day for the environment in 1972, which was designated by the UN General Assembly.
Kakching
World Environment Day 2023 was observed today at Angaan Ching Eco Park, Kakching organized by the Central Bureau of Communication, Field Office, Chandel in collaboration with Thoubal Forest Division.
The observation at Angaan Ching Eco Park was attended by over 70 local residents of the area and participated in a tree plantation drive around the park, said a statement by the Central Bureau of Communication, Field Office, Chandel.

Speaking as the chief guest, Divisional Forest Officer, Th Lokendro highlighted some of the significant steps every individual can take up to beat plastic pollution.
He also said that various organizations, bodies, and stakeholders should work in the direction to address the challenges that have posed a threat to the environment.
He urged the participants to adopt an eco-friendly practice to have a greener and cleaner environment.
The observation was also attended by Range Forest Officer, Kakching L Dinesh; Field Exhibition Officer CBC FO Chandel M Rustum and President of Alliance for Development Alternative Manipur Dilip Kshetri.
Members of the Patanjali Yoga Samiti, Kakching district also participated in the tree plantation drive.
A spot quiz competition based on this year's theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution' was also held as a part of the programme.
Kamjong
The Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture (ISA) and Ramrei Katamnao Long (RKL) jointly organised World Environment Day at Ramrei village in Kamjong district today characterized by environmental awareness and road side tree plantation drive.
A press release by ISA informed that 72 youth members of Ramrei Youth Organisation participated in today's awareness cum tree plantation programme.
During the awareness programme, ISA vice-president Simeon Varam called on the need of forest protection and massive tree plantation thereby stressing on the responsibilities of youths to replenish nature in the interest of environmental promotion and climate mitigation.
Jiribam
Power Grid, Jiribam Forest Department and 132 KV Powergrid Jiribam jointly observed World Environment Day at Kadamtala in Jiribam district.
In connection with the programme, Range Officer Jiribam, N Biraj Singh appealed all to plant trees wherever possible.
He also informed all to contact the Jiribam Forest Department for need of saplings and relevant requirements.
Senapati
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Friends Across Borders (MANEDA) in collaboration with Naamai Eco-Tourism Club and Xtreme Adventures Club organised a mass cleanliness drive in and around Senapati Headquarters.
Addressing the gathering, Senapati Headquarters SDO Lunguiba Thangal urged all to reach out to every nook and corner about the importance of cleanliness in one's surroundings.
As a part of the programme, the volunteers also pasted posters to raise awareness on safeguarding the environment and maintaining cleanliness.
Thoubal
Under the motto "Everything Starts From Home" and "Reduce Plastic Pollution", Bishnunaha Youth Federation Yairipok (BYFY), observed World Environment Day by conducting a wide scale plantation cum cleanliness drive at Bishnunaha Pukhri Achouba and Bishnunaha Garden and its surrounding areas and planted fruit bearing tree saplings.
Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), Thoubal district in association with Child Care and Educational Foundation ( CCEF) Wangjing also observed the day at CCEF campus today.
Longjam Ashakumar, SDC Mayang Imphal; CCEF chairman Dr L Jelshyam; Thoubal College Assistant Professor Dr M Damudor; former DDO ZEO Thoubal, Tekcham Bikomdas; social activists M Memma and Sh Shyam graced the occasion as the presidium members.
The dignitaries while speaking at the occasion emphasized on safeguarding the environment.
The programme was followed by a tree plantation drive in CCEF campus.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Young Ideal Club Cum Library (YICCL) Keibul and Meira Paibis jointly conducted a plantation drive today at YICCL ground at Keibul Makha Leikai in Thanga AC .
