4452 displaced persons in 31 relief camps: DC Kakching

Kakching district deputy commissioner So-morjit Salam has informed that 4452 people displaced from different areas espe-cially Sugnu and Serou are taking shelter in 31 relief camps opened in the dis-trict, while many others are staying with their relatives and friends.
Addressing a press meet on Monday, Somorjit said that the relief camps opened in Kakching, Wabagai, Hiyan-glam and Sugnu assembly constituencies are run by lo-cal clubs, meira paibi groups and peace committees with donations from public.
The district administra-tion is also extending edibles, mattresses, mosquito nets, etc., to the relief camps, Ed-ucation Department provid-ing textbooks & sports items for students in the camps; ICDS/Anganwadi supplying nutritional meals, milk pow-ders & baby foods; Health Department conducting regular health check-ups and distributing necessary medicines, while Sugnu, Hiyanglam, Kakching and Wabagai MLAs are also ex-tending their support to the camps, he conveyed.
The DC further mentioned that though majority of the displaced persons are in the camps due to fear substantial numbers of the inmates have nowhere else to stay as their houses were among the 400-plus houses burnt during the conflict.
Further stating that a formal proposal has been sent to the government for long-term relief camps for the displaced people, So-morjit informed that the government buildings and institutions under consid-eration for setting up such camps include Kha Manipur College, Kakching Boys & Girls Hostel; SC Girls Hostel and erstwhile SSB post at Ka-kching Wairi Panjao Panlum.
