Thoubal, January 21 2023:
With the Department of Environment and Climate Change all set to develop the Usoipokpi wetland in Thoubal district as a tourist spot, Thoubal deputy commissioner Ahanthem Subash led an official team in carrying out demarcation around the wetland on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the demarcation exercise, Subash informed that Usoipokpi wetland, which is in Chaobok village under Lilong sub-division and spreads over 43 hectares will be developed into a proper water body to attract tourists.
Restoring and conversion of the water body will also help lessen the impact from climate change, Subash observed while conceding it will take some time to compile the final report of the survey.
He urged the people to support the initiative being taken up by the district administration.
During the survey, the team also surveyed the present condition of the wetland with its original form using old map of the location.
Sharing her observation, SDO Shijalembi Chanu said that climate change is now a serious globe problem mainly caused due to reckless human activities.
She, however, expressed confidence that restoring Usoipokpi wetland would contribute in mitigating effect of climate change apart from promoting tourism in the state.
