Urging Meetei Pangals of the state to remain true to their identity and preserve their Manipuri surname, chief minister N Biren has said that Pangals without Manipuri surname will not be considered for government jobs.
He made the remark during an inspection visit at Haj House which is being constructed at Lilong Kaleikhong on Saturday.
Interacting with the locals present there, CM Biren asked them to compare the welfare initiatives taken up for Meetei Pangals by the present and past governments while asserting that the Haj House is an example of the government's commitment towards the welfare of Meetei Pangal.
He urged the Meetei Pangals of the state to remain true to their identity as indigenous people of the state.
Since olden times, Meetei Pangals have their Manipuri surname and the present generation should preserve and use them.
Pangals without Manipuri surname will not get government jobs and it has been approved by the state cabinet, he reiterated and revealed that there are some Meetei Pangals in the state, who have given up their original identity and embraced those in Arab countries.
On the contrary, Meetei Pangals in other states as well as in Bangladesh are still upholding their identity as the indigenous people of Manipur, which is heart-warming to see, he said, Lilong MLA Md Abdul Nasir, who accompanied the chief minister during the visit, said that there are over 3000 drug addicts in Lilong area and urged the CM to take up measures for rehabilitating them.
In response, the CM said that the issue of drug addict has become an important matter not only in Lilong but also for the whole state.
The issue has hit even smallest communities including the Tangkhul and it needs a concerted effort to eradicate the menace of drugs and bring back the addicts into the mainstream through de-addiction and rehabilitation, he added.
