Imphal, January 21 2023:
In continuation of ongoing agitation spearheaded by Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) for exerting pressure on the state government to send the requisite recommendation to the Centre for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list of Indian Constitution, representatives of different organisations under the aegis of Coordinating Body of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee met Sugnu MLA K Ranjit and submitted a memorandum on Saturday.
After receiving the memorandum at his Babupara quarter, here, MLA Ranjit said that he fully supports the demand being raised by STDCM for constitutional protection of the Meetei/Meitei community.
He recalled that the STDCM's demand started from the tenure of past Congress government but could not convert the demand into action.
There were some differences over the demand within the community and the tenure of the Congress government ended while trying to sort out the differences, he added.
Many MLAs and ministers have now supported STDCM's demand and differences over the demand that existed in the past seem to be almost non -existent now, Ranjit said and appealed to the government and CM Biren to send the required recommendation to the Centre.
On the other hand, a human chain protest in pursuance of the demand for sending the recommendation to the Centre was held on Saturday at Pangei bazar in Imphal East district.
The protest was organised by Pangei Yangdong Development Association in coordination with STDCM.
