Kangpokpi, July 06 2026:
The Sadar Hills Inland Transporters' and Drivers' Union (SHITDU) on Sunday extended emergency relief to truckdrivers stranded for several days along National Highway-2 amid the ongoing highway standoff in Manipur.
The stranded drivers, many of whom are from outside the state, have been caught between Namduilong-Kanglatongbi, where a Liangmai Naga organisation has been enforcing an economic blockade for over two months, and the Gamgiphai Buffer Zone, where Kuki-Zo organisations have been staging round-the-clock protests demanding the lifting of the blockade and restoration of free movement along the highway.
The prolonged standoff has left dozens of truck drivers stranded for more than five days.
Many reportedly ran out of food and drinking water and had no access to basic facilities such as toilets.
Responding to their plight, SHITDU distributed essential relief materials, including rice, cooking oil, drinking water and other necessities.
The union also assured the stranded drivers that humanitarian assistance would continue for as long as they remained stranded.
Appealing to both sides involved in the highway standoff, SHITDU urged them to recognise the vital role played by transport workers and to consider the hardships being faced by drivers caught in the middle of the agitation.
The union also called on the Manipur Government to take urgent steps to resolve the impasse and restore free movement along National Highway-2, stating that transport workers should not become victims of prolonged protests while carrying out their duties.
