Imphal, August 01 2026:
A training programme of census enumerators and supervisors organised at St Joseph Higher School, Kuraopokpi in Tengnoupal district was foiled by JFD Task Force, Meira Paibis and the Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) .
A number of Government employees from different parts of Chandel district started arriving at the school at around 9 am to attend the scheduled training programme.
Just as the trainees and the trainers stepped inside the school campus, a large group of people belonging to the JFD Task Force, CNPO, Meira Paibis and the Maring Uparup Assembly reached there.
The civil society volunteers made it clear that they would not allow any census related training programmes.
Following strong objection from the civil society leaders and volunteers, the Government employees who came for the training programme could not enter the school.
Leaders of the JFD Task Force leaders explained to the Government employees possible implications and far reaching consequences of conducting the census without first updating the NRC.
In the meantime, the school authorities came out and asked the Government officials not to hold any census related training programme at the school if there is a prohibition.
Soon after, the Government employees who came for the training programme left the place one after another.
Not long after the employees left the place, a police team led by the Officer-in-charge of Machi police station came there and took stock of the situation.
CNPO convenor T Saka remarked that the Government's repeated attempts to hold census related training programmes in spite of the collective voice to defer the census operations until the NRC is updated reflects a blatant disregard for the people's sentiment.
Categorically saying that no census related training programmes should be held in any part of Tengnoupal district, Saka asserted that the census operations should be carried out only after distinguishing genuine citizens from illegal immigrants.
