Imphal, August 01 2026:
A sitting BJP MLA has spoken out openly in support of the people's collective demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before conducting any census operation.
BJP MLA Lourembam Rameshwor has warned that the indigenous people will be defeated without even fighting any war at the hands of illegal immigrants if the NRC is not updated.
He was speaking at the 45th Hawkers' Day held at Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple complex, Haying Khongbal here today.
Rameshwor asserted that the NRC must be updated before conducting exercise at all cost in order to protect the indigenous people.
He pledged that he would work at his best level to fulfil the indigenous people's demand for updating the NRC before census.
The BJP MLA said that the Manipur Legislative Assembly will take a concrete resolution on updating and implementing the NRC during the eighth session of the State Assembly which will commence from September 2 .
He maintained that the census exercise must be put on hold until the NRC is updated.
If the census exercise is conducted without first updating the NRC, all the indigenous people will come under complete domination of illegal immigrants, he warned.
In order to avert such a grim situation, the NRC must be updated and all the illegal immigrants must be identified without fail, he added.
