Police foil TG students' march to Lok Bhavan

Imphal, August 01 2026: Police today foiled an attempt by a large number of students from TG Higher Secondary School today to take out a protest rally to the Lok Bhavan (Raj Bhavan) under the banner "No NRC, No Census, No IDP resettlement, No Census" .

Holding placards which read "No NRC, No Census", the students marched out from their school campus at around 2.30 pm .

On learning about the protest rally staged under the aegis of the JFD Students' Wing, a strong police force led by the Imphal West SP tried to block the students' path.

The two sides held a brief talk and the students were allowed to take out the protest rally for a short distance.

Aggrieved by the Government's response to the issue, the students shouted slogans saying that the census operations must be put off until the NRC is updated and all illegal immigrants are identified.

All this while, the security forces managed to confine the students around the gate of their school.

It is a matter of grave concern that the Government has been paying little attention to the people's collective demand to first update the NRC before carrying out census operations, said one of the students. She said that the student community will support and join the people's collective movement to get the NRC updated.

She urged the Government to initiate necessary processes to get the NRC updated at the earliest.

JFD Students' Wing convenor Naorem Wangamba said that the student community will continue with different modes of agitation until the Government wakes up to the gravity of the situation.

The Government should think about why students who should be investing their time and energy in their academic careers are coming out to the streets, Wangamba said.

He also demanded immediate suspension of all census related training programmes.
