Two AR men killed in Imphal-Ukhrul road ambush

Ukhrul, July 06 2026:
Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed in a deadly ambush in the forested area of Mikei along Ukhrul-Imphal road near Nungshangkong (Lung-shangkong) bridge, Hungpung village, Ukhrul.
The deceased jawans have been identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman (driver) CM Singh of 40 AR posted at Shangshak.
Sources said that a team of Assam Rifles was transporting rations in a truck to Shangshak battalion from Ukhrul when they came under a fierce attack from unknown militants at around 2 pm .
Intermittent firing lasted for more than one hour and a half before it ended around 3.30 pm .
Two AR personnel sustained injuries in the ambush and they succumbed to the injuries on the way to Shangshak battalion headquarters, said the sources.
Following the incident, Assam Rifles reinforcements rushed to the area and cordoned off the forested area of Mikei and sanitised the ambush site.
A team of media persons from Ukhrul also rushed to the spot to take ground reports.
However, the media persons were prevented by AR personnel deployed on the highway from entering the site in spite of identifying themselves as media persons.
When the media persons finally reached the site, the injured personnel had already been evacuated but the truck was found on the road.
More than 20 bullet holes were clearly visible on the truck while its left side was stained with blood.
Over 50 labourers including women working in the nearby ply factory were detained and were seen herded on the roadsides.
Vehicles moving on Imphal-Ukhrul road were halted on both sides by Assam Rifles personnel.
As a result, many people including farmers remained stranded till the time of filing this report.
Later, a police team led by SP Ukhrul, Abhinav too arrived at the site and took stock of the situation.
Tangkhul CSOs - TNL and TSL - also rushed to the ambush site to take stock of the ground situation.
No organisation has claimed responsibility for the deadly ambush till the time of filing this report.
