Imphal, August 06 2023: As a mark of protest against alleged excesses meted out to Meira Paibis by Assam Rifles personnel, Meira Paibis have joined hands and resolved to hold a series of agitations against Assam Rifles.

A convention was held today at Malom Tulihal Mamang Leikai in the presence of a large number of womenfolk today.

The brutality and excesses committed by Assam Rifles personnel in the recent public movements were discussed minutely during the meeting.

Speaking to the media on behalf of the Meira Paibis after the meeting, one Salam Purnima said that the action of the Assam Rifles personnel in the recent days have gone way beyond tolerable limits.

On May 3, Assam Rifles not only threatened lives of many Meira Paibis from across the Manipur by firing several live rounds of bullets, tear gas shells but also used hazardous chemical spray at Phougakchao Mayai Leikai in Bishnupur as they tried to move towards Torbung Bangla to oppose the now-deferred mass burial event, she said.

They were stopped from further proceeding using "electrified barb wire" as barricades, she alleged.

Many fell unconscious during the incident while many were injured that day.

It was an attempt to kill all the Meira Paibis, said Purnima in a resentful tone.

In view of the excessive acts, the Meira Paibis gathered today have decided to impose curfew on AR and restrict their movements from tomorrow onwards, she said.

However, there will be no restriction on movements of public and employees of Government and non-Governmental agencies, she added.

The activities of Assam Rifles are heavily inclined on suppressing Meira Paibis and Meitei society at large.

No matter how hard they try, Meira Paibis will never back down nor run away from the very task of saving Meitei society and Manipur, she said.

Meira Paibis will also keep fighting against narco-terrorists and their allies, she continued while seeking support of all Meira Paibis across the State in enforcing the proposed curfew on AR .
