'Reopen border trade after restoring normalcy'

Imphal, September 19 2026: The Manipur International Trade & Economic Cooperation (MITEC) has appealed to the Government to open border trade through only after complete normalcy is restored at the border town.

MITEC held its first general body meeting at Hotel Classic Grande, Chingmeirong today.

Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the general body meeting, MITEC executive member Khuraijam Khamba said that they received reports of the Government working to reopen Moreh border trade.

On receiving this information, people who did petty businesses at Moreh before the violent crisis broke out had already held two rounds of meetings at Lilong Chajing.

It is rather surprising that the Government is planning to open the border trade when Meitei and Naga people are unable to go to the border town and people displaced from the town have not been resettled, Khamba said.

He pointed out that a considerable number of people who used to earn their livelihood by trading Moreh goods have been living without any source of income for the last three years.

On learning about the Government's plan to reopen Moreh border trade amid the highly insecure situation, people who earlier did small business at Moreh and operated passenger transport services held a joint meeting and resolved to appeal to the Government to reopen the border trade only after all the people displaced from the border town are resettled and complete normalcy is restored, Khamba said.

He said that another objective of MITEC is exploring legal options toward resettlement of all the people displaced from Moreh.
