Imphal, November 03 2026:
A sit-in protest was staged at Lilong Arapti today, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur with 1951 as the base year and resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), among other demands.
The demonstration, held under the supervision of AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF, was attended by local residents and members of Chaobok Kabui Women Society and Chingkham Kabui Women Society.
Among other demands, the protesters called for updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year, commencement of the census exercise only after updation of the NRC, resettlement of IDPs, removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, and invalidation of the 2026 Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking to the media, COHR chairman Phulindro Konsam said that they would continue to stage protests at different places until their demands are addressed.
He said the issue of illegal immigrants plaguing Manipur is not a new development.
Stating that the influx of illegal immigrants had already caused demographic imbalance in the State, with many of them now obtaining voting rights, Phulindro claimed that some illegal immigrants had even contested elections in the State.
He added that no census-related activities should be undertaken until illegal immigrants are identified.
Stating that violence continues unabated in Manipur despite the Government's claims of peace, he urged the Government to publish a white paper assuring the protection of the lives and properties of the people.
