People's curfew against Assam Rifles today

In denunciation of the brutal crackdown on meira paibi activists by the Assam Rifles on August 3 at Torbung Bangla, newly floated Organising Committee on Mass Protest Against Assam Rifles announced imposition of "people's curfew" in the state on August 7.Though schedule of the 'curfew' has not been specified, committee member Naorem Kalpana said decision on the same was arrived at in a meeting of meira paibi groups held at Lainingthou Khunjaoba Laibung at Malom Tulihal Mamang Leikai on Sunday.
Addressing media persons after the meeting, Kalpana, who is also convenor of Kakching Apunba Nupi Lup, informed that the meeting was participated by meira paibis who took part in the agitation on August 3 against attempt for mass burial of bodies of Kukis killed in the ethnic clash at Torbung Bangla.
She recounted that as the meira paibi activists objected to the mass burial move, the Assam Rifles deployed in the area blocked the road using barb wires charged with electric current, chemical weapons and sprays during which many women lost consciousness with medical reports available confirming that some of those undergoing treatment vomited blood.
Alleging that the Assam Rifles deployed for safeguard of the people are showing no mercy on one community while exercising maximum restraint on agitators of another community, she asserted that as the Assam Rifles might commit more serious atrocities meira paibis will sustain the movement till complete withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the state.
Kalpana declared that the womenfolk will prohibit movement of Assam Rifles during the people's curfew on August 7 across the state but there will be no restriction on other security forces as well as the public.
Appealing to meira paibi groups of every locality enforce the people's curfew, she said that memorandums will be submitted to the Governor, IGAR (S) and security advisor Kuldiep Singh as part of the agitation.
