Salam Deepak, the Assistant Sub Inspector of City Police who allegedly shot and injured a woman recently was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West and remanded to judicial custody amid angry protesters trying to storm the Cheirap Court complex today.
When ASI Salam Deepak (34) was brought to the Court by a team of Lamphel police, people from the locality of the woman victim protested in front of the gate and demanded capital punishment.
He has been remanded to judicial custody till January 24 .
It may be noted that the accused, Salam Deepak had allegedly shot Haorokcham Thajamanbi twice after a he&dd argument between the two on January 5 night at Tera Khuraijam Leirak.
Salam Deepak is son of S Gourakishore of Iroisemba Mamang Leikai.
He was produced before the Court of (he CJM Imphal West after completion of police custody period.
To avoid unwanted incidents, police pushed back the agitators, mainly women, from inside the Court complex and closed the main gate.
In the Court, the Investigating Officer, through Assistant Public Prosecutor, submitted that according to Haorokcham Kingson, the victim's younger brother, accused Salam Deepak, an ASI in the Manipur police and his sister, Haorokcham Thajamanbi, were in a relationship.
The siblings, Haorokcham Kingson and Thajamanbi were staying in a rented house located at Tera Khuraijam Leirak.
On January 5 at around 9.30 pm, Salam Deepak came io their rented house "drunk" and had a heated argument with Thajamanbi.
When the brother and sister insisted Salam Deepak cprpe the next day, he allegedly took out his service weapon from his pocket and threatened Thajamanbi holding Kingson's neck.
When scared Thajamanbi ran away from Deepak shouting "Ima Ima" towards the main gate, he shoved the brother, chased Thajamanbi and allegedly shot her twice.
When Kingson ran towards the main gate, he found his sister lying in a pool of blood.
Thajamanbi was first rushed to RIMS and then to Raj Medicity for treatment.
Two projectiles were taken out from the victim's body at Raj Medicity.
Police have seized the projectiles as evidence.
On the other hand, the Investigating Officer, in the Court, submitted that during interrogation, Salam Deepak claimed that the victim (Thajamanbi) "repeatedly" called him on the phone and "harassed" him "mentally over and over again" on the day of the incident.
Deepak claimed that the victim was also "drunk" and added he was trying to "calm" down the situation by threatening to use his service weapon.
When the victim ran away towards the gate out of fear, he followed her and "stumbled" near the drain, which caused the shooting.
He then immediately came to the city police station on his moped and without informing anyone, he left, leaving the moped at the station.
Stating further investigation is required in the case, the Investigating Officer prayed the Court for judicial remand of the accused.
The Court on perusal of the case records and after hearing the submissions, remanded accused Deepak to judicial custody till January 24 .
