Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh has said that breast cancer accounts for 16.6 per cent of cancers in Manipuri women and most of them belong to younger age-groups.
State NCD Cell & CMHA Cell, National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services Manipur jointly organised a State level breast cancer awareness workshop cum panel discussion programme on "Together We Rise" at Hotel Classic Grande at Chingmeirong, today.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Health Minister continued that the number of breast cancer patients in Manipur is more than cervical cancer patients.
He further stated that breast cancer can be cured if detected in the initial stage.
Saying that ASHA and ANM workers need to be trained to attend to breast cancer patients apart from doctors and nurses, the Health Minister conveyed that the State Government has been working to provide better health care facilities to the people.
Dr Ranjan also laid emphasis on delivering health services at grassroots level.
Screening of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) has started in Manipur, the Health Minister informed and appealed to all medical professionals to be sincere and treat the patients with utmost dedication.
Later, appreciation certificates were distributed to 16 staff and doctors for their services.
Health Director Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang; State Mission Director, NHM, Manipur Dr Somorjit Ningombam and Additional Director of Public Health Dr Y Gopalkrishna also attended the programme as guests of honour.
Earlier, the Health Director flagged off an awareness walkathon on breast cancer from Lamphelpat and it headed towards Uripok, Khwairamband Keithel and Nagamapal before culminating at the starting point.
