Scribes observe Press Club day

The 47th foundation day of Manipur Press Club was celebrated at the club's premises at Majorkhul, Imphal yesterday.
Babina Group of Companies chairman and managing director Dr Thangjam Dhabali, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) president Wangkhemcha Shamjai, Editors' Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram and Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd managing director Ningombam Ibochou attended the event as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion.
Dr Th Dhabali emphasised on the importance of media and said it is the fourth pillar of a democracy.
Apart from giving information on daily happenings around, the media should also emphasize on educating and empowering people.
For example, articles about the need to conserve the environment and obey traffic rules may educate the people on the issues, he said.
Environmental issues are of key concern of the whole world and it is the duty of the media to educate people on the issue.
While informing people about the environment, the media should also teach people about waste management, he added.
Manipur is also a State where people neglect traffic rules.
The people of the State of Mizoram are much more disciplined in this regard, he said.
The people of Manipur should also be taught about time, he said lamenting that people here generally have little respect for time.
While developed Nations around the globe take time very seriously, the disrespect for time has become a tradition here, he added.
As a part of the foundation day celebration, two newly constructed guest rooms were also opened at the Press Club.
Former presidents, general secretaries of AMWJU, and many senior journalists attended the event.
