Imphal, December 19 2022:
Women's Association for Socio-economic Development, Manipur (WASEDM) celebrated its 19th Foundation Day at Manipur Press Club, here, on Monday.
The celebration function was attended by retired District and Sessions Judge A Noutuneshwori as chief guest, WASEDM president RK Tharaksana as president and LOUSAL president M Churamani as guest of honour.
In her speech at the event, A Noutuneshwori lamented that crime against women continues unabated in Manipur regardless of the masses launching movement and agitation from time-to-time demanding befitting pun ishment of those involved in such crimes.
While observing that there are also some faults among women of the state in such unfortunate incidents like sexually assault or rape, she stressed the need for extensive awareness programmes to the women folks as well to prevent these incidents.
Some women killed after suspected cases of rape were found to have had illicit relationship with the perpetrators before the ghastly incident took place and hence women particularly young girls should every possible precautionary measure as and when their male colleagues call them out from their homes, A Noutuneshwori advised.
According to the retired judge, parents need to give special care to young girls when they reach puberty as maintenance of privacy for them is very much required.
She said that girls hailing from families which do not have proper toilet or separate rooms are vulnerable to unfortunate incidents.
She also said that a rapist cannot be punished immediately as due procedures of law need to be followed before awarding them befitting punishment.
