Sports backbone of nation building theory: Khemchand

Asserting that sports is the backbone of nation building theory, rural development and Panchayati raj minister Yum nam Khemchand has stressed the need for promoting sports.
The minister made the remark at the closing ceremony of a 15-day non-residential coaching camp for ball-badminton, which was organised by Ball-Badminton Association Manipur at Model Club basketball ground, Chingamakha on Monday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, Khemchand emphasised on the physical and mental health benefits of sports as well as its contribution in the nation building exercise by instilling a sense of nationalism among the players.
Earlier, sports were not considered as an important aspect of life as well as career.
As such, the government did not give much interest in sports.
However, those policies have changed and the government is now providing reservations for sports in recruitment.
Ball badminton is also a recognised sport, he said while encouraging the players to pursue for excellence in the field and make it a career.
He also motivated the players and wished them best of luck in the ensuing National Ball Badminton Championship to be held in Kerala from December 24.Ball Badminton Association Manipur president Dr Laiphrakpam Kumar presided over the function while Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar was the guest of honour.
A 24-member team including 10 men; 10 women and four officials, who would represent the state in the ensuing national championship, participated in the coaching camp.
They will leave Imphal for Kerala on Wednesday.
