Imphal, October 07 2022:
As in the past many days, several organisations staged sit-in protests at different locations on Friday denouncing the state cabinet's decision to legalise production and sale of alcohol in the state.
Nongchup Imphal Palem Ima Apunba (NIMPAL) Uripok Branch staged the protest demonstration at Uripok Takhellambam Leikai, where its secretary general Soraisam Shanti Leima asserted that legalising liquor is against the will of people and will eventually bring chaos in the society.
In order to bring peace, progress and development, prevention of drug and liquor related incidents is a must, she added.
Noting that the people are going to be divided on the government's move to legalise liquor, she cautioned of conflict among the people.
Shanti Leima reiterated that they have been demanding the government to bring out a white paper regarding the liquor legalisation and without it they will not hold talk with the government.
She cautioned of launching intense form of protest if the government fails to produce the white paper within October 10 and appealed to the people for supporting their movement.
In order to boost the economy of the land, self-sufficiency in food production must be given top priority for which the government should focus more on agricultural activities, she opined, while urging to create work culture and ensure availability of fertilizer in time and proper irrigation facilities to agricultural areas.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, Wangoi Laiphrakpam Branch staged a sit-in protest against legalisation of liquor at Laiphrakpam Makha Leikai community hall.
Slogans denouncing the legalisation of liquor and demanding production of a white paper were also shouted during the protest.
