Imphal, October 07 2022:
Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), of Directorate of Agriculture on Friday felicitated Chak-hao Poireiton Organic Producers' Company Limited chairman Ch Shanta, who won the 2nd position at Jaivik India Awards 2022 for organic farmers.
Agriculture minister Th Biswajit and agriculture director N Gojendro attended the felicitation function held at the farmers' training hall of the directorate located near Sanjenthong, here, as chief guest and president respectively.
In his address, minister Biswajit said that farmers no longer have to worry about selling their products since the state government has taken up an initiative to buy rice from farmers for distribution to the public under the National Food Security Act.
He encouraged the farmers to increase their production by practicing at least double cropping wherever possible.
He assured of all possible assistance from the government in this regard.
He, however, urged for minimal use of chemical fertilisers.
The country is spending over Rs 80,000 crore in importing ammonia for urea production.
Apart from the huge expenditure, using chemical fertiliser is harmful to health as well as soil, which is why the government is promoting organic and natural farming.
A new type of fertiliser called nano fertiliser is being introduced among the farmers and it not only reduces transportation cost but also improves soil health, he said.
Regarding the crop failure that the state is experiencing due to erratic rainfall, the minister said that the department is planning to distribute winter crop seeds as compensatory crop under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.
Chak-hao Poireiton Organic Producers' Company Limited chairman Ch Shanta shared experiences about the efforts that the company put in while adopting organic farming.
