Dept hosts Hangeul Day

Department of Foreign Languages, Manipur University observed Hangeul Day in the university's court hall today.
MU Department of Foreign Languages Programme Director Prof Hyun Kyung Lee, VC Prof N Lokendra, University and Higher Education Director Dr Rangitabali Waikhom, MU Humanities Dean Prof N Aruna and Department of Foreign Languages, Head Prof S Imoba attended the inaugural session as presidium members.
Republic of Korea's Ambassador to India Chang Jae-bok too attended the programme in virtual mode and conveyed a congratulatory message.
Prof Hyun Kyung Lee said that the Korean alphabet known as Hangeul was invented by Korean king, Sejong the Great in 1446 .
In commemoration of the landmark event, October 9 is observed as the Hangeul Day every year, he said.
For the first time in India, Korean language was introduced and taught at JNU in 1970.Korean language was introduced in Manipur University in 2012, Prof Hyun Kyung Lee said.
Now, there are many universities in India where not only Master's course but also MPhil and PhD courses on Korean language are offered, he said.
