Senapati committee warns stir over tardy road work

The Senapati Phaibung Road Development Committee together with leaders of 18 villages asked the authority concerned to take immediate step for completion of the 128 km stretch of road between Senapati and Phaibung.
Briefing media persons at TNK, Senapati on Friday, secretary RL Paongi informed that an emergency meeting of the Road Development Committee together with leaders of 18 villages residing along the Senapati-Phaibung road was held to express dismay over the non - completion of the said road which has been delayed for 18 years now.
The secretary said that they were compelled to hold such meeting as there is no alternative to road connectivity and urged the authority concerned to take immediate step for completion of the road.
He added that the meeting also resolved to resort to intense form of democratic agitation if their demand is not fulfilled within the month of October.
Mention may be made that Senapati-Phaibung Road which begins from NH-2 at TNK Village, Senapati is the only communicable road connecting the southern Lepaona and Chilivai villages which they called as the most neglected zone of eastern Senapati district, bordering Ukhrul district.
Construction of Senapati-Phaibung road was entrusted to the BRO/25 BRTF by DoNER and implemented under the NLCPR scheme with funding shares of 90% by the central government and 10% by the state government.
The said work commenced on December 16, 2002 and was reportedly suspended in 2012-13 after completing half the distance due to technical problems.
Even though work on the same road project resumed in 2018 it could not be completed tilldate due to non-re-lease or fund, he said and recounted that residents of the area had also complained about poor quality works along the stretch between Tingsong to Ngamju villages that was started during 2018-20.With lapse of 18 years since commencement of the work, the road is left without any repair works other than minor repairs executed by few ADC members in collaboration with different villages of the area to date.
The design life span of Cl 9 specification road is reported to be only 10 years.
It has been 18 years now and the road is riddled with potholes and damaged culverts and drainages.
The construction was reported to have stopped in 2021 .
