Politicians can't be trusted to repeal AFSPA: Khaidem Mani

Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairperson Khaidem Mani has said that the demand for removal and repeal of AFSPA is facing a major roadblock due to the incompetency of politicians.
Khaidem Mani was moderating a one-day consultation programme on 'Prospect of Peace and Withdrawal of the Disturbed Area under AFSPA' organised by MHRC at the Imperial Hall of Hotel Classic Grande, Chingmeirong on Sunday.
Senior journalist Pradip Phanjoubam, JNU associate professor Dr Bimpl Koijam, WIN-G Manipur member Nonibala Narengbam, PINE coordinator Dr Deben Bachaspatimayum, IGNTU Regional Centre Manipur faculty (political science) Dr Homen Thangjam, United NGO Mission Manipur member U Nobokishore, Rayburn College, Churachandpur lecturer Ronika Vungwankim and HRLN Manipur director Rakesh Meihoubam spoke as resource persons at the programme.
While making his observation, Khaidem Mani stressed the need for vigorous efforts for ensuring repeal of the draconian law.
No government has commitment to resolve key issues concerning the state.
ILP System was implemented in the state due to public movement.
Public cannot place their trust on the government with regard to the demand for removal or repeal AFSPA, he said and assured to contribute whatever he could as the chairperson of the commission in the pursuit of repealing AFSPA.
Though the government's proposal for peace talks with UG organisations might be an approach to remove the Act, the public need to sustain their movement against the Act, he added.
